Meet Patricia Pfau

Research with people.
Information for participation.

I am Patricia Pfau — a Brazil-raised researcher based in Scotland, interested in the connections between migration, information, language and everyday belonging.

Research, language
and participation.

Through BridgeIt Navigating Scotland, I bring together source-linked writing and research interests to make complex systems more understandable. The aim is not to reduce people to labels, but to ask how information, institutions and communities can make room for different voices.

My experience as a Portuguese and Spanish interpreter in refugee and asylum-service settings informs the questions I bring to research and writing. BridgeIt is independent; naming my university describes my research context, not institutional endorsement.

My Europe in Motion series explores migration, integration and belonging through country perspectives. The first edition starts with Scotland/UK, Germany and Ireland. Each perspective asks what turns arrival into practical participation — without assuming that a country, a culture or a population can be captured by one number.

Doctoral research

Whose voice is heard?

I am a doctoral researcher in Social Policy at the University of Strathclyde. My research focuses on asylum seekers’ reliance on an interpreter’s voice, and how this relates to agency, fairness and dignity in the Scottish asylum process.

I am exploring how people can be heard, understood and respected when their access to a system depends on communication through another person. This website is not a research-recruitment notice.

A guiding idea

Belonging and origin
can coexist.

Learning how local institutions work should not require someone to make their previous language, culture or knowledge invisible. Integration is a relationship: people learn the local steps, and communities and institutions learn to listen.
